2026 Harold Dennis, Jr.
Harold Dennis Jr. is the recipient of the 2026 Ron Butler Character in Adversity Award, an honor that recognizes courage, determination and character in the face of extraordinary adversity.
Originally from Nashville and raised in Radcliff, Kentucky, Dennis is one of the survivors of the 1988 Carrollton bus crash, one of the nation's deadliest drinking-and-driving-related crashes. He was just 14 years old when the tragedy occurred. In the years that followed, Dennis transformed unimaginable adversity into a life marked by perseverance, achievement and purpose.
Dennis graduated from North Hardin High School, where he was an All-State athlete in soccer and track. He was recruited to play soccer at the University of Louisville before transferring to the University of Kentucky, where he earned a full athletic scholarship as a wide receiver for the Wildcats. He later earned degrees in kinesiology and physician assistant studies and currently serves as a licensed Physician Assistant in Kentucky.
His personal and athletic journey has earned national recognition, including the Arete Award for Courage in Sports, the Gene Autrey Award for Courage in Sports and the Johnny Unitas Courage Award in Sports. He was also selected to run in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay and has been featured by national media outlets for his story of resilience, courage and hope.
